Painting en plein air- outdoors, from life- is the best way I know to ensure total immersion in the moment. There I am on a glistening day, having made the effort to walk a bit with a pack carrying my pochade box (portable easel/supply case), seeking a spot with a view I can't resist translating into paint on a board. I try to paint what I can see and add in what I feel. I look for the focal point. What is making me react? Is it the contrast of the glowing shadow against the sunlit barn, or the color of something set off in a field of grays? I become enmeshed with the physical world as I notice the details, seduced by its nonchalant beauty. My compulsion to paint gives me the opportunity to thoroughly see and interpret things I consider beautiful, that I wish to share.
